The Carellis in Austin: Llama's
Food trucks are a wonderful way to experience the most eclectic food a city has to offer. This is particularly true in Austin where food choice abounds. While deciding on where to get dinner on our second night in town we came across a set of food trucks offering a wide array of foods: quesadillas, egg rolls,.....llamas?! Turns out that Llama's doesn't actually serve llama but rather a wonderful blend of Peruvian and Creole foods.
I began with anticuchos - grilled beef heart marinated in ají panca and spices, grilled potato, Peruvian corn, rocoto sauce and green onions. As my first introduction to beef heart I was a bit anxious - then I remembered that I love chicken gizzards and this couldn't be any weirder than that. Sure enough there was no reason to be concerned as I thoroughly enjoyed the dish.
Next up was a protein that I had a LOT of familiarity with - I had no problem ordering a pork belly sandwich. The sandwich consisted of grilled twice cooked pork belly, fried sweet potato, salsa criolla, ají amarillo aioli, hoisin, and cilantro on a bolillo (short french bread).
